What I am doing now
This is a now page with short and wildly sporadic updates on what I'm up to.
Three-quarters of the way through my Recurse batch! I've been working on a lockpicking game for the RCade (playable here!), I've been experimenting more with custom elements, and working on a few more assorted ideas. I've been hosting events, giving talks, and generally having a great time!
| Playing | Big Walk |
| Hosting | Tea service at the Recurse Hub and at TAC Summer Tea |
Beginning week six at Recurse (the halfway point)! I've started experiments with writing a declarative p5.js which I am tentatively calling p5ml. I spent the last week in the Adirondacks and got some kayaking in.
| Reading | The Tatami Galaxy |
| Looking forward to | Attending HOPE 26! |
Week three at Recurse! I feel like I'm still getting the hang of things but I am quickly building confidence and definitely having a great time! Learning about Web Components and about Web browser internals. Also planning to host an event!
| Reading | Seaweed Chronicles: A World at the Water’s Edge |
| Trying to | get xdg-desktop-portal working on NixOS (and failing) |
Completed my first week at the Recurse Center! It's been very busy but I'm starting to get my bearings now. Playing around with HTMX, talking web and accessibility, working on my website a little too. Larger ideas slowly starting to form.
| Reading | The Nature of Code |
| Looking forward to | The end of this heatwave |
Recurse is right around the corner! I went to a welcome call and have been doing some technical setup. Spending time at the community garden and picking raspberries. Temporarily failing to get Nix running on my desktop again.
| Reading too much at once | Art & Fear, Hypermedia Systems, Detransition, Baby, When The Forest Breathes |
| Cooking | Scampi gnocchi, gnocchi scampi |
I've been on a couple mini-adventures recently - Prospect Park and the East Village. On the former I met a 12-week-old black lab, on the latter I sat a while at Té Company with a nice oolong. Meditating more, rebuilding my desktop, and trying to do some writing too!
| Planting | Poke milkweed, Zigzag goldenrod, Heartleaf aster |
| Reading | Jean Paul Brammer on reading |
| Playing | More Subnautica 2 |
I'm beginning my mini-sabbatical and starting to develop a routine. Taking daily notes (with Obsidian) to set out some priorities for the day has been helpful! I've been building up my balcony garden with some plants from Lowlands Nursery. I'm continuing to make little improvements to this site and have a few more planned soon (but may save some of it for my Recurse batch).
| "Reading" | The audiobook of Finding the Mother Tree |
| Making | My third Dactyl Manuform keyboard |
| Playing | 868-BACK |
After almost ten years, today is my last day at Google! I will be spending the next month or so working on personal projects and then I'll be attending the Recurse Center for the full Summer 2 batch. In June, I'll be building keyboards, gardening extra-hard, and working on this website. I am also getting back into archery lately - I did it somewhat seriously in high school but barely since then. I am enjoying it a lot so far!
| (Re-)Reading | Lifelong Kindergarten |
| Playing | Subnautica: Below Zero |
| Learning | how to prune trees |
